Possibly the most difficult element of Starcraft strategy is learning how to micro and macro manage simultaneously. Learn how to do both and you will become a better player!
Any truly successful Starcraft miltiplayer strategy will include and require good macro and micro management of the game. If you never took any economics courses, you may need to know that “macro” has to do with the bigger picture. In Starcraft 2 terms, that means your build orders, overall economy and effective use of resources. In contrast, “micro” is all about the smaller elements of strategy, like your attacks, controlling specific units, effective ability use and so on. Players with good micro skills can lead to higher kills-to-death ratio against your opponent units, thereby extending your own individual unit’s life, use and effectiveness.
Let’s talk about a few of the most important aspects of both macro and micro management in Starcraft 2 strategy:
Macro:
Build Orders – Your build orders are the very foundation of the early part of your game. They help you to get off to a good start and can be a great advantage if you implement them well, or an insurmountable disadvantage if you do not. One good tip for new players looking to improve their games is to look up build orders from better players who use the same race that you prefer to use.
Economy – Your economy is extremely important for obvious reasons. Without the minerals or vespene you need to build units and buildings, you won’t be able to perform any kind of Starcraft strategy whatsoever. Therefore whenever you start a competitive match, always never neglect your economy!
Expansions – Winning matches in Starcraft 2 requires an outlook similar to that of a shark: if you don’t keep moving forward, you will die. A good Starcraft strategy must include constant expansion in every area. This includes resource gathering, developing new areas and widening out your area of control, and building bigger and better units. The trick, as with all of these tips, is to be able to handle this principle while also commanding your units on an individual or micro level. At the same time, over-expanding can leave you “spread out” and vulnerable.
Income – You won’t have a successful economy in Starcraft 2 if you aren’t producing the income that you need. One helpful Starcraft strategy tip is to work for saturation by having two workers on nearby mineral patches and three workers on patches that are farther away.

Micro:
Scouting – Scouting is an underrated part of Starcraft strategy but is an absolute vital tactic to your success in multiplayer. With so many units being absolutely dominant if not countered the correct way, you simply must know what your opponent is doing so that you can prepare the right counter strategy. Send out SCVs, Overlords and Protoss Probes as early as possible to scout.
Harassing – Harassing is a long-time Starcraft strategy used to put pressure on your opponent, misdirecting him into making mistakes and slowing down his builds. The idea is to send a few units constantly early in the game (quickly amassing your units as fast as possible) to harass the opponent’s workers (and at the same time scout for what your opponent’s army composition) while you work on upgrading, expansion and counter strategies.
Hit and Run – Hit and run is a type of harassing strategy that is best reserved for very fast units. What you want to do is simply rush in, take out a few enemy units, then take off and escape with as little damage as possible. This strategy if play well can greatly increase your kill-to-death ratio.
Hot Keys Control – You can have the best Starcraft strategy, but if you take forever and a day to issue orders to your units and execute actions, you won’t do very well. That’s where hot keys come in. With good timinng and speed control of hot keys, you can easily take care of actions quickly, which allows you more time to balance micro and macro necessities. Don’t ever skip this.
You definitely can’t afford to neglect one area of your game in order to excel in another. That is why it is so important to balance macro and micro when it comes to good Starcraft strategy. Practice and maintain this balance, and you will have much more success in multiplayer matches.
