- This may seem like one of the more obvious tip in any real time strategy game, but if you’re new, start out by playing against the computer, using the help menus for information. You should also master the basic hot-keys and play as one race at a time.
- Build plenty of workers and harvesters early, because without them, you won’t be able to collect the resources fast enough to build the units to win the match. When you get to about 20 workers at a particular base, expand to another base!
- You should also learn to micro and macro well to avoid waiting for anything in Starcraft 2, including waiting for supply depots to complete. Instead, cultivate the habit to manage your supply often before you hit your capacity to ensure there are no wasted downtime.
- This is another general real time strategy game tip for beginners. If you just order troops to “move”, they won’t defend themselves or attack enemy units along the way. Selecting a destination with “attack” will move them just the same, but will allow them to attack units they encounter during their trip.
- Don’t forget to scout on your opponent. Many pro gamers in Starcraft 2 use this strategy to keep an eye on their adversaries, so should you. This way, you’ll be know what your opponent is doing and will always be ready to counter.
Always try to take the offensive early. By sending units aggressively early and forcing your opponent to react to you can become a great advantage. For instance, if you play Terran, sending marauders can force a Protoss opponent to build immortals and zealots, to which you can respond by building marines and hellions, which can slice through the enemy forces and possibly get you an early win.- Instead of going head-on against the enemy’s forces, try to attack them where it really hurts by killing your opponent’s workers as often as possible, which will prevent them from being able to build quickly.
- When you need to rebuild your army fast (and you will need to), you will want as much unit production as you can possibly get, so don’t neglect building extra gateways, barracks, and hatcheries at any point in the match.
- Take movement over power. Powerful towers that can’t move aren’t always that helpful. Instead, focus on less powerful units that can move as needed to defend and attack.
- In Starcraft 2, cloaked units can end the game quickly if you’re not careful. Every race has units that can detect cloaked units on the enemy squad so make sure you have at least one.
- Being able to save your replays and review them is an underutilized feature, especially for newer players. Review your games and see what strategies your opponent use, where you went wrong so that you can learn and work on it to improve your game-play for newer match-ups. Even in your wins, you can still learn and easily spot things that could have been done better!
- Many people focus on their APM (actions per minute), which is fine because at upper-level play, differences in APM can decide the game. However, you shouldn’t be boosting your APM just for the sake of doing so. Make sure you are making moves that make sense, or you can still easily lose to a slower-paced (but better strategizing) opponent. One way to improve that APM command is to learning to use keyboard shortcuts. They are much faster than using your mouse!
